Avengers Assemble!

And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single hero could withstand! Through the years, their roster has prospered, changing many times, but their glory has never been denied! Heed the call, then—for now, the Avengers Assemble!

Welcome to the newest team to bear the honored name of Avengers—the Midwest Avengers!

Formally “The Avengers: Midwest Chapter” and informally “the Chicago Avengers,” this team was assembled in 1984 by the Vision and his wife, the Scarlet Witch, in order to protect America’s heartland from the growing threats of super-villains and high-tech common criminals alike. Coming only a year after the founding of the West Coast Avengers, the Midwest Avengers are something of an experiment to see if one team can actively safeguard what most Americans call “flyover country.”

The team operates out of the top ten floors of the Pittsfield Building, a 38-story skyscraper in the heart of downtown Chicago, the area called “the Loop.” Only a few blocks from Civic Center and within close range of Chicago’s famed L Train, the Pittsfield Building mostly houses professional offices and small businesses, but the city donated the top ten floors for the use of the Avengers, including converting the top two stories into a hangar bay for the team’s pair of Quinjets—the Shrike, an experimental fast-attack VTOL, and the Peregrine, an equally experimental space-capable flyer.

The original Midwest Avengers were: One-Eyed Jack, a luck manipulator; Deadly Nightshade, a phermone-controller with natural bone spur weapons; the White Queen, an alien noblewoman with control over ice; Mentor, a young mutant with telepathic powers; and G-Force, a genius inventor with a suit of gravity-controlling power armor. All five of these heroes remain on the roster, though each of them has their own adventures to take care of as well.

It became quickly apparent that five heroes were not enough to protect the entirety of Chicago, let alone the American Midwest, when the Avengers came under assault by the Zodiac Cartel, an organization of supervillains dedicated to dominating the criminal underworld. Since the initial skirmishes against the Zodiac, the Midwest Avengers have dealt with many foes—including the Cult of Uggthultu, an elder horror that sleeps beneath Lake Michigan; Pack Rat, a scavenger who uses discarded super-tech; and stranger foes still.

The Midwest Avengers have begun recruiting heroes to join their ranks. Do you have what it takes to be an Avenger?
